I’ve seen some truly outrageous things passengers have done on planes, but what one woman was caught doing aboard a cruise ship made me wonder how anyone could think it was acceptable. Millions of people have watched the videos, and some were so disgusted that they demanded the woman be banned from cruising altogether.
But the story didn’t end there, even after another passenger caught her on camera. What happened afterward prompted even more questions, including one that kept coming up. The cruise line eventually released an official statement, but something about its response baffled me, especially after working in PR for more than two decades.
I’ve been dreaming of taking a cruise since high school, when a movie about a family’s vacation at sea made me want to experience one myself. Since then, I’ve watched countless cruise-themed shows and movies, and I’ve even started seriously planning my first trip. But I never imagined that something happening in a ship’s dining room could generate this much outrage – or that I’d find myself reading hundreds of comments about what the crew should have done.

I’ve done a lot of research too – cruise lines, routes, price simulations, the whole thing. I even looked into what to pack and how to prepare for the trip, and I compared a few cruise routes and destinations to narrow things down. I’m genuinely close to booking, even though I’m claustrophobic and my husband gets seasick on pretty much anything that floats.
I know that on cruises – just like on airplanes – you get all sorts of people. And when it comes to airplanes, the list is honestly wild: passengers going barefoot on their seats, someone eating food that made the whole cabin smell, and a passenger painting her nails during a flight, which prompted calls for a lifetime ban.
Yet even after writing about so many unusual passenger incidents, I wasn’t prepared for what happened aboard this cruise.
The first video has 18.1 million views – and the comments are brutal
The incident took place aboard a cruise ship and was documented in six Instagram videos by a fellow passenger, who posts as @lucky_charmedcourt.
In the first clip, a woman sitting in a dining area is filmed scratching the bottom of her bare foot with her hand. The skin appears dry and flaky, and the scratching is quite vigorous. I can’t tell from the video whether she has a medical condition, but the irritation looks uncomfortable.
Then, without visibly washing or sanitizing her hand, she reaches for her food and eats it.
That first video alone has now reached 18.1 million views, 212,000 likes and approximately 11,000 comments. And if you read the comments, you quickly discover which moment disturbed viewers the most.
“She put extra parm on her pizza😭😭,”
one person joked, while another admitted,
“I was already having a hard time but def lost it when she grabbed her foooodddd and ate it 💀”
Someone else wrote, “Then eat with the same hand OMG,” and another viewer couldn’t get past what they had just watched:
“This is by far one of the MOST disgusting and disturbing things I’ve ever seen!!!! GIRL what in the hell is wrong with you???? YUCK🤮🤮🤮”
While some people focused on the woman’s food, others thought about the people eating nearby and what she might have touched before or after.
“She handled every spoon on that buffet with the same hand. ……Bon appétit,” one commenter claimed, while another worried, “I’m sure she touched everything at the buffet with those same hands 🤢”
Neither claim is established by the footage, but the concerns explain why the video triggered such a strong reaction. One viewer even declared,
“And this is why I don’t believe in walking barefoot anywhere! Hotel room- No. Public pool- No! Hotel shower- NO!”
At this stage, you might think the woman was simply making an unpleasant personal hygiene decision. But the second video shows something that goes well beyond scratching an itchy foot with her hand.
Then she picked up a fork
In the second clip, the same woman takes a dining fork and uses it to scratch the bottom of her foot, scraping the skin with the utensil while other passengers are eating nearby.
Yes, a fork. At a dining table. And judging by the reactions online, many people could barely believe what they were seeing.
The second video has reached another 9.5 million views, 120,000 likes and 58,600 comments. Some viewers reacted with disgust, others made jokes, and many wanted to know why nobody had intervened.
“Dead skin cells just flying in the atmosphere,”
one person wrote, while another said,
“Like an itchy foot is fine, but this shit is UNACCEPTABLE 😮😮😢😢”
One viewer asked the question that probably crossed a lot of people’s minds: “How is someone so unaware that scraping your foot with a fork that is not yours and in the dining room with other people not ok.”
And then came the reactions about using restaurant cutlery again.
“That fork be going straight in the BIN 🤢,” one commenter insisted, while another announced, “Bringing my own utensils to restaurants and cruise moving forward 😭”
There was even someone who desperately wanted the incident to be fake:
“ain’t no way. I want to believe this is AI so bad 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🫠”
Others were considerably angrier. “I would have said something, I’m sorry but no this is disgusting and just unacceptable,” read one comment. Another person imagined calling the authorities, demanding that the woman be removed at the next port, banning her from future cruises and making that fork her personal utensil forever.
The comments kept returning to the same issue: surely someone should have reported this to the crew?
As the remaining videos show, someone did.
What happened after the videos were recorded?
The woman filming the incident didn’t stop after capturing the two clips. Her Instagram account contains a six-part series documenting the situation and what happened afterward, including her interactions with the ship’s staff.
The third video has now reached 2 million views, 11,600 likes and 1,784 comments, bringing the first three clips to a combined 29.6 million views.
In the subsequent videos, the Instagram user documents reporting the matter to a guest services representative and then speaking with the captain. The footage shows that she pursued the complaint beyond her initial conversation with the crew, seeking action over the dining utensil.
That sequence adds context to the Instagram comments demanding intervention. The person who filmed the incident reported it, and the cruise line later confirmed it removed the utensil from service.
As the videos spread, however, the story reached Reddit, where people began raising another set of questions. While plenty of Redditors were as disgusted as the Instagram audience, some were far more interested in what the cruise line could have done with the fork.
Reddit had one big question about the fork – and some people wanted the passenger banned
In one discussion, a post titled “I’m glad we’re in agreement” appeared in r/Cruise, sharing the cruise line’s response to the incident. The original poster immediately pointed out something unusual about the company’s announcement: “Alas, comments are disabled!”
Some people were still recovering from the video itself.
“For your own good do NOT watch the video. It’s one of those things that get seared into your memory permanently,” one Redditor warned.
Another responded that the warning had only made them more curious. After finding the footage, they edited their comment to say: “found it and regret it. You were right. That’s disgusting :(”
Others had little patience for the passenger. “We need to bring back shame and consequences,” one user declared, calling her actions horribly antisocial. Another was even more direct: “Customer should be banned.”
The discussion also attracted people who questioned whether removing a single utensil could prevent the behavior from happening again. One Redditor asked what would stop the woman from taking forks back to her cabin, while another raised a more troubling question:
“They said the fork in question has been removed, how in the world do they know which fork it was?”
That same doubt appeared in a discussion on r/nope, where a user questioned how the crew could identify the utensil unless a crew member had witnessed the incident or otherwise tracked it. Another commenter claimed the fork was probably already mixed in with the other cutlery, but presented no evidence to support that claim.
The conversation took an interesting turn when another Redditor challenged the concern about reusing a properly cleaned fork, pointing out that restaurant utensils regularly come into contact with people’s mouths and must undergo effective washing and sanitizing between uses.
“It’s been washed and sanitized regardless. It’s hardly worse than many people’s mouths,” one person argued.
Not everyone accepted that reasoning. In another cruise-focused subreddit, one commenter suggested making the utensil the woman’s personal fork for the remainder of the voyage. Others wanted stronger consequences, with one writing,
“Ts made me gag when I first saw this. She needs to be banned. No joke!”
Another Redditor was curious about whether the woman had even discovered how widely the videos had circulated: “I’m curious to know if foot fungus lady has seen herself all over the Internet yet. You know people she knows have seen this.”
And, inevitably, the discussion produced some dark humor. One person suggested the dining room was now offering freshly grated Parmesan, while another coined the phrase “Fresh feetuccine.”
The Reddit threads weren’t just full of disgusted jokes. They contained a genuine disagreement over the response: should the utensil be discarded, would professional sanitizing have been sufficient, and should a passenger who behaved this way face consequences beyond a conversation with the crew?
People also disagreed over the cruise line’s public statement. Some people found the humor funny, while others felt it wasn’t serious enough. One Redditor who hadn’t even watched the footage said the wordplay made them chuckle, while another felt the response was too light for the passenger’s behavior.
So what exactly did the company say that sparked both laughter and frustration?
What the cruise line officially said – and why I think it could have been better
The cruise line involved was Carnival Cruise Line. It issued a statement on its official Instagram account addressing the viral footage. The company confirmed that the crew had spoken with the guest and removed the utensil from service.
Its statement began by reminding passengers that forks are for eating, not foot care, and assured guests that onboard hygiene is taken seriously.
But Carnival also decided to have a little fun with its wording. It acknowledged that the videos were generating both laughs and gasps online, then joked about maintaining cleanliness standards across its “feet fleet,” with “feet” crossed out in favor of “fleet.”
You can read Carnival’s official statement below.

A Reddit commenter summed up the criticism:
“Carnival’s response is not serious enough for how gross the passenger behavior was.”
As someone who has worked in marketing and PR for more than two decades, I have mixed feelings about this response.
Carnival acknowledged the situation publicly, said it had addressed the behavior with the passenger, and confirmed it removed the fork. The company didn’t ignore the footage or leave passengers without reassurance, and that was a good decision.
But the “feet fleet” joke felt unnecessary to me. The company had already acknowledged that the videos made people laugh, and adding another pun to a hygiene statement made the tone a little too playful.
Another detail I noticed: comments appeared to be disabled on Carnival’s own statement. So while the message used a friendly, humorous tone, people couldn’t discuss the response directly beneath it. As the Reddit conversations show, some of them had questions they wanted answered.
For instance, Carnival said it removed the fork from service, but its public statement didn’t explain how it identified the utensil. Although the company said it addressed the matter with the passenger, I haven’t found any verified announcement confirming she was banned from future cruises or faced additional consequences.
Those unanswered questions don’t establish that Carnival failed to act. They simply show where its public communication stopped, while the discussion among passengers and social media users continued.
Would you have reported her?
I’m still dreaming of taking a cruise, and the videos haven’t changed that. But after watching someone scratch her foot in a dining room, eat with the same hand, and then use a fork for something it was never intended to do, I can certainly understand why other passengers were upset.
I’m glad the woman who filmed the incident brought it to the crew’s attention and kept following up. Without her account, it’s possible that very few people outside that dining room would ever have known what happened. It reminded me of another Carnival incident I covered recently, involving a passenger who said crew members entered her cabin while she was showering. The circumstances were different, but both passengers wanted answers about what happened onboard.
I’m curious, though, about what others would have done in her position. Would you have confronted the passenger at the table, reported the incident to guest services, or waited to see whether the crew intervened? And do you think Carnival’s response was sufficient, or should the passenger have been banned?
