I love flying, and in my experience, most passengers are considerate of the people around them. We all want to reach our destinations comfortably, and most people understand that sharing a relatively small space with strangers requires some patience and common courtesy.
But occasionally, someone does something so inconsiderate, inappropriate or downright disgusting that other passengers are left wondering how to react. I’ve heard stories about a Delta passenger who refused to end a phone call, forcing everyone to get off the plane, and another about a passenger confronted for his behavior, whose encounter sparked a huge debate. There was even a first-class seat dispute where a flight attendant’s attempt to resolve the disagreement led to another surprising reaction.
You can try to ignore inconsiderate behavior, although some things are simply too unpleasant to tolerate, especially when you’re stuck on an airplane with no possibility of moving away.
Of course, we can call a flight attendant. We can also ask the person responsible to stop, but they may not appreciate being confronted. And when you’re thousands of feet in the air, with several hours left before landing, getting into an argument with a stranger isn’t exactly appealing.
Then there are passengers who decide they’ve had enough and take matters into their own hands.
That’s exactly what happened to a Delta Air Lines first-class passenger who encountered something unpleasant during a flight. Instead of trying to reason with the person responsible, the traveler decided on a very different approach, and their account sparked an interesting discussion.
As I read other travelers’ experiences, I found that several people faced similar situations, one more disturbing than the other (read on as I am including all the examples), as you will see, with responses I certainly wouldn’t have expected. One encounter became a much bigger confrontation, while another traveler found an unusual use for something commonly available on airplanes.
And the more accounts I read, the more I wondered how I would react in their place.

A Delta First-Class Passenger Found Something Unpleasant on Their Armrest
On October 16, 2026, a passenger shared a photograph in the Delta community on Reddit, accompanied by a very short title: “Another foot…”. The picture showed a stranger’s bare foot extending from the row behind into the space beside the traveler’s seat, close to the window and directly where someone sitting in front might want to rest their arm.
The person who posted the photograph identified the cabin as first class. Imagine paying for a premium seat, settling in for your flight, and suddenly discovering someone behind you has decided your armrest is a convenient place to rest their bare foot.
To me, this is simply unbelievable.
I understand wanting to be comfortable on a flight, especially a long one. You might want to stretch your legs, change positions, or even remove your shoes (but you shouldn’t do that on an airplane). But putting your bare feet into another passenger’s personal space is gross and incredibly inconsiderate. And I find it difficult to understand why anyone would consider someone else’s armrest an acceptable footrest.
The Delta traveler certainly wasn’t willing to tolerate it. Instead of asking the person to move, they used their elbow to send a fairly unmistakable message. As the passenger explained in the original Reddit post:
“Foot was introduced to my elbow and it retreated back to the seat where it belonged. Good day to wear sleeves.”
The remark about wearing sleeves says quite a lot about how unpleasant they found the encounter.
When other Reddit users discovered what had happened, many approved of the response. Others thought there was a better way to handle the situation, and the disagreement soon produced some entertaining suggestions.
Reddit Reacted: Disgust, Elbow Support and Some Unexpected Ideas
The strongest recurring reaction in the October 16 Reddit discussion was disgust at the stranger’s behavior. People disagreed about what the traveler should do next, but comments criticizing bare feet in someone else’s space were far more prominent than any defense. This is a reading of the visible discussion, not a statistical count of every reply.
“People are so f-in gross…”
Another commenter wrote
“People are exhausting. No one should put up with this.”
A first-class traveler said they had seen similar behavior more times than they could count, describing it as “so disrespectful and disgusting.” Others reacted with “OH HELL NO,” “That’s just gross” and “Eww,” while one joked that the long-sleeved shirt protecting the Delta passenger’s elbow should now be thrown away.
Several supported the passenger’s decision to act. One wrote, “That foot needed a sharp elbow!” The original poster answered: “It got one. And the foot understood the message.” Another commenter said simply, “You push it off with your elbow.”
One especially outspoken participant said they actually welcomed the chance to confront someone behaving badly: “I’m so glad I love confrontation lol.” They described how quickly they would turn around and demand the foot be removed, with an elbow ready if the warning was ignored. Another agreed that people should speak up, complaining that when no one does, the offenders continue behaving that way.
Not everybody wanted to turn around and start an argument. Some of the most popular types of suggestions in the discussion were comic, embarrassing, or downright strange.
Tickling, Fake Sneezes and Other Suggestions From Reddit
One commenter proposed saying,
“Coochie coochie coo!”
and added that it needed to be loud enough to embarrass the other passenger. Several more proposed tickling the foot, with one writing “Tickle tickle tickle” and another joking that the idea might send the wrong message.
Others imagined pretending to sneeze.
“Lean over and cough on it,”
suggested one, while other comments proposed flicking water at the foot during a fake sneeze or accidentally spilling a cold drink. One person joked about bringing a spray bottle on future flights. Another proposed carrying a permanent marker to decorate any feet placed in their family’s space.
Some replies went further, including suggestions about hot drinks or sharp objects. Those suggestions could hurt someone and escalate a cabin dispute.
Others Said a Simple Request Was the Better Option
A smaller but persistent group believed a direct conversation was preferable to using an elbow. One wrote,
“Use your words”
and the Delta passenger replied, “My elbow worked just fine thank you.” Another offered the wording they would use: “would you take your foot off my armrest? Thanks.”
Other passengers also confronted similar behavior directly. One reported seeing the same thing the previous week, then turned around and asked the person to take their foot off the armrest. According to the commenter, the other person looked stunned but complied, and nobody argued.
A commenter who had recently flown overnight from Canada to Europe described being woken by two women talking loudly while the cabin was dark. The traveler nearly summoned a flight attendant, then decided to ask the women to lower their voices. “They both surprisingly did exactly as I asked,” the person reported, before admitting they weren’t sure how to ask someone politely to move bare feet away.
Another replied with a broader lesson learned from similar situations:
“Clear is kind. Just ask respectfully.”
That advice makes sense in many situations, but another contributor to the same discussion described an experience where making a request apparently led to a much bigger confrontation.
A 10-Hour Flight Turned Into a Confrontation After a Passenger Asked a Woman to Stop
One of the more troubling stories came from a traveler who said they had experienced a similar problem on a 10-hour flight while sitting in premium economy.
The passenger was trying to sleep when a woman seated behind them repeatedly placed her bare feet on top of their seat. Having someone’s feet near your head is unpleasant at any time, but trying to rest while dealing with that behavior is especially frustrating.
The commenter explained:
“I tried to, because she had her bare feet up on top of my seat, it was a 10 hour flight, I was in Premium, and I was trying to sleep and couldn’t.”
The traveler attempted to resolve the issue by speaking to the woman. According to the Reddit account, however, she became aggressive and insisted she had only two options: put her feet on top of the seat or extend her legs straight into its back.
The traveler said the woman demonstrated the second option by “ramming her feet into my chair aggressively several times.”
The passenger tried to explain that another option was to keep her feet on the floor like everyone else, but the woman reportedly kept kicking the seat.
Eventually, a flight attendant came by and asked her to lower her feet. The woman allegedly told the crew member that the passenger in front had given her permission to behave that way, prompting the traveler to correct her immediately.
Even after the flight attendant intervened, the commenter claimed the woman occasionally continued stretching her feet onto the top or side of the seat, close to their arm.
The traveler said the woman sometimes stretched her feet “down the side next to my arm,” even after the crew intervened. “Gross!” was their assessment. The commenter added an ironic detail: the woman had been talking at length about her experiences as a Christian missionary returning from Estonia. “I sure didn’t feel converted,” they remarked.
Another detail in the account. The commenter claimed that flight attendants had acknowledged serving the woman too much wine. This allegation hasn’t been independently verified, and the airline and flight details weren’t established.
What struck me about the story was how much effort the passenger apparently had to make just to sit and sleep without someone else’s feet taking up their space.
The original Delta traveler hadn’t tried to have a lengthy discussion. This person did, and reportedly ended up being kicked, contradicted in front of a flight attendant, and bothered again afterward.
Another Reddit commenter had experienced an intrusion almost identical to the one photographed on the October 16 Delta flight, but their response involved something I hadn’t expected.
Another Passenger Used an In-Flight Magazine to Deal With a Stranger’s Bare Foot
In the same Reddit discussion, a traveler recalled an international flight where someone sitting behind them stretched a bare foot forward and placed it on their armrest.
According to the commenter, the person behind wasn’t simply resting their foot there. As they stretched to get comfortable, their toes allegedly touched the passenger in front.
The commenter put it much more vividly:
“This happened to me and I rolled up the in flight magazine and swatted that gross foot. Didn’t happen again.”
In the longer version of the account, the traveler said they were “Horrified” when the stranger’s toes nudged them, and described the contact with the SkyMall magazine as gentle.
According to their account, the passenger behind withdrew the foot and didn’t put it back into their space during the rest of the journey.
I have to admit that using an in-flight shopping magazine for this purpose wasn’t a solution I’d have considered. But it wasn’t the only unexpected response travelers described, and another discussion in the Delta community involved almost the same problem months earlier.
Another Delta Passenger Tried Using Their Elbow – and Discovered It Wasn’t Quite So Easy
In February 2026, a traveler shared a complaint in the Delta Reddit community about someone’s footwear occupying space near their armrest. Moderators later removed the original post, but the discussion and the traveler’s updates remain visible.
Initially, the passenger considered using their elbow to reclaim the space. Another commenter encouraged a more forceful response, but the traveler soon discovered that reaching the offending foot wasn’t quite as easy as expected.
The passenger offered an update after trying the elbow approach:
“I guess my arms are a bit too short… I’m fun sized.”
Despite that obstacle, they reported clipping the tips of the person’s toes.
Their update ended with the result: “now the fluffy shoe is gone.”
Another traveler participating in the discussion described a similar experience on a previous flight. They hadn’t even realized someone had placed a foot near their armrest until they put their elbow down and encountered the person’s shoe.
They decided to leave their arm where it belonged, and according to the account, the other passenger kept their foot down afterward.
The February discussion didn’t entirely support posting such encounters online. Some commenters criticized travelers for photographing inconsiderate passengers instead of simply asking them to move, while others argued people shouldn’t need to explain why another person’s armrest is off-limits.
And in a separate incident involving a mother and her child, the affected passenger faced criticism online despite being the one repeatedly subjected to unwanted contact.
A Mother Allegedly Kept Putting Her Bare Feet Into Another Passenger’s Space on a Flight From Hawaii
In July 2026, a passenger shared another unsettling experience on Reddit after flying from Hawaii to the US mainland.
According to the account, the traveler sat in an aisle seat, with a child in the middle seat and the child’s mother by the window.
Throughout the journey, the mother allegedly kept repositioning her bare feet around her daughter’s seat. Sometimes they were on the child, sometimes near the seat pocket, and at other times behind her daughter, forcing the girl to sit close to the edge of her own seat to accommodate her mother.
The aisle passenger claimed that the woman’s bare feet repeatedly touched them as well.
The accompanying photograph was confusing enough that several commenters initially struggled to tell which legs belonged to which person. Others questioned whether the image had been manipulated, although the traveler maintained that the incident had occurred.
Readers expressed disgust at the mother’s alleged behavior, but some also wanted to know why the affected passenger hadn’t confronted her. “Ewwwwwwww,” one reacted. Another focused on the child: “Poor kid.”
One commenter asked what the woman had said when she was asked to keep her feet away. Another suggested calling a flight attendant if the woman refused to cooperate.
Others were more sympathetic to the passenger’s hesitation. One Reddit user pointed out that someone willing to put their bare feet onto a stranger might not react kindly to being confronted.
Some also criticized passengers who photograph an incident and complain online afterward without trying to resolve it during the flight.
One commenter asked, “Why should he be expected to have to ask her to not touch him with her bare feet?” Another argued that someone willing to put bare feet so close to a stranger might react poorly to confrontation, while a different participant responded that the traveler could call the flight attendant.
The discussion showed how differently people can react to the same account. Some focused on the behavior itself, others on the passenger’s decision not to confront the mother, and several were concerned about the child, who allegedly had to sacrifice her own comfort.
An American Airlines First-Class Passenger Had a Similar Problem – and the Feet Moved Somewhere Else
Delta passengers aren’t the only ones reporting these experiences. In April 2026, View from the Wing covered an American Airlines first-class incident in which a traveler reportedly discovered someone else’s feet resting on their armrest.
When the passenger pushed the feet away, the person responsible allegedly moved them onto the airplane window instead. The coverage included the cheeky suggestion to “Start Selling Feet Pics” as well as criticism of passengers treating shared cabin surfaces as personal footrests. It was another case where the attempted solution didn’t end the underlying inconsiderate behavior.
In September, another discussion in the American Airlines Reddit community focused on passengers putting their feet up against the cabin walls in first class.
That conversation was interesting because some people seemed more bothered by the feet’s position than by the fact that passengers had removed their shoes.
And on the subject of removing shoes, Reddit users were divided.
Is It Acceptable to Take Off Your Shoes on an Airplane? Reddit Users Disagreed

Some commenters in the September American Airlines discussion argued that passengers should keep their shoes on, especially because of cabin cleanliness and the unpleasant smells that can develop during a long flight.
One person said they had previously sat beside someone whose feet smelled bad despite wearing socks. Another argued that passengers should keep their feet off the walls and other cabin surfaces, whether or not they’re wearing shoes.
But other travelers saw nothing wrong with removing shoes during a flight, as long as passengers were considerate of those around them.
One commenter said, “Unpopular opinion. But I think it’s ok to slip shoes off at your seat,” before adding that feet should stay in the proper place and shoes should go back on when leaving. Another summarized the opposite limits: “Shoes off is ok, socks off is not ok, feet up is also not ok.”
Others agreed that shoes could come off if passengers wore socks, avoided unpleasant odors, and kept their feet to themselves. One traveler was succinct: “Just keep the dogs where they belong.” Another noted that some premium routes offer slippers and socks.
Several travelers noted that airlines sometimes provide slippers or socks in premium cabins for passenger comfort on longer journeys.
I understand why someone would want to remove uncomfortable shoes during a long-haul flight, especially when trying to sleep. If their feet are clean, covered, and kept within their own space, I don’t see the need for other passengers to make an issue of it.
But placing bare feet on someone’s armrest, stretching them beside another passenger’s face or repeatedly touching a stranger is an entirely different level of inconsiderate behavior.
People should be able to relax on airplanes without worrying about someone else’s feet appearing beside them.
What Can Passengers Do When Someone Invades Their Personal Space?
After reading the different accounts, I understand why some travelers react immediately, especially when the behavior is unexpected and unpleasant. It’s frustrating to have to ask another adult to stop doing something that should never have happened in the first place.
But I can also understand the commenters who recommended speaking up before resorting to physical contact.
A polite request may be enough, as the traveler who confronted the two women talking loudly on an overnight flight discovered. If the person refuses, becomes aggressive, or continues invading your space, involving a flight attendant is generally the safer option.
Using an elbow or another object could escalate a disagreement, even when the affected passenger feels completely justified in defending their space.
The accounts also show that there isn’t a guaranteed solution. Some people reportedly stopped after a single gesture, while the woman on the 10-hour flight allegedly continued her behavior even after a member of the crew intervened.
Personally, I would rather not find out how an inconsiderate stranger might react to being confronted, but I also wouldn’t want to spend an entire flight tolerating repeated unwanted contact.
Conclusion: How Would You Have Reacted?
The October 16 Delta passenger decided to use an elbow, and the account prompted plenty of support from people who had encountered similar behavior. Other travelers described using a magazine, speaking up or involving a flight attendant, with very different experiences along the way.
I find it astonishing that people sometimes need to defend something as basic as the personal space they’ve paid for, whether they’re flying economy or first class.
On a funny note, this incident reminded me of how people have fought back against rude tourist behavior in other situations. Some responses were inventive, and a few had consequences the people involved probably hadn’t anticipated.
As much as I enjoy flying, we can only control so much about the experience. We can choose our seats when the airline allows it, prepare everything in advance with a night-before-a-flight checklist, and bring what we need to stay comfortable. We can’t prepare for every unexpected decision made by the strangers sitting around us.
I’m curious what you would have done in the Delta passenger’s situation. Would you have asked politely, used your elbow or called a flight attendant?
And do you think taking your shoes off during a flight is acceptable, as long as you keep your feet in your own space?
Editor’s note: The Reddit incidents discussed in this article are firsthand accounts shared online. While some posts included photographs, the full circumstances of the flights and passengers’ allegations haven’t been independently verified.
