Sea Life Munich: The Ultimate Guide to Bavaria’s Underwater World

Since I started creating my list of places to visit in Munich, Sea Life Munich has been one of the must-see attractions. There was no way we would visit Munich and not go there!

After the day we spent at Legoland Deutschland, it was about time to stay in the city and discover more of the Munich attractions.

On the day we visited Sea Life Munchen, we first visited BMW Welt and BMW Museum. Afterward, we arrived at Sea Life Munich (and next it was Olympiapark).

This place was interesting, and there are a few things to know before visiting Sea Life Munich that I will share in this article. I admit that before visiting, I saw all sorts of opinions on this place, both good and bad. Some praised it for the numerous beings that can be seen here, others said it is small and you can go through it in less than 30 minutes.

Sea Life Munich Guide

As you might already know, I like to make my impressions and I do a lot of research before visiting a city so that I know both the famous attractions and the hidden gems, then I create itineraries for each day 🙂

Important note: the photos are taken with my phone – No blitz (obviously!) – but my battery was 20% so I took a few pictures and not all of them are the best quality.

Therefore, the photos you will see below do not convey the beauty of the place.

How to get to Sea Life Munich

How to get to Sea Life Munich octopus

As I mentioned, we went to Sea Life Munich after visiting BMW Welt and BMW Museum – so, for us, it was just a short walk to Sea Life Munich.

Located at Olympiapark Munich, Sea Life Munich is easily accessible by public transport.

I recommend installing the MVV-App (the official app for public transport in Munich) as it will help you get from any place to wherever you want in the city! We used it daily in Munich and we had no issue.

You can take a taxi too, but I would not recommend it, as Munich has public transport that allows you to get anywhere you want (especially to famous sights like these.)

Sea Life Munich Tickets

You can purchase tickets in advance (in theory they are cheaper), or when you get to the Sea Life.

We were not sure when we would arrive at Sea Life Munich, so we chose to pay there.

The price for a ticket for an adult (15+) is 22 euros online or 23.50 euros on-site. The price for a ticket for an adult with a photo pass included is 24 euros online or 25.50 euros on-site.

I think that there are some special prices for families because we paid 61.50 euros for 2 adults + 1 child (13 years) and a photo included. As mentioned, we paid on-site.

Personal tip: on the official site, you will see that it states that entrance is guaranteed for tickets bought in advance and time slots reserved. While we were lucky that it was not crowded when we got there, you may get there when there are many people and you will have to wait.

What to expect inside Sea Life Munich

Sea Life Munich has Germany's largest variety of sharks.

When I researched the places to visit in Munich, I saw that Sea Life is presented as Germany’s largest variety of sharks.

It was enough for me to include it on our Munich itinerary!

Also, I am adding this here as I think it is useful to know, you will see that on the official Facebook page, they are Sea Life Deutschland – So a Sea Life Germany might return the searches you are looking for.

I am adding this because I tried to read about people’s experience – what was it like for them – but apart from some comments on 1-2 famous sites, the search engines did not return any blog posts among MANY pages 🙁 We all know about the recent algorithm changes, so I will not get into those details, but I hope this article is useful to you.

Sea Life Munich fish tank

Sea Life Munich is not huge, but it has several areas: Isar, Danube, Danube Delta (from my country, Romania, yay!), the Black Sea (we also have the Black Sea where we go during the summer!), Mediterranean, tropical ocean and more.

While it is not huge, there are several floors and many sea creatures that can be admired up-close. There are plenty of Sea Life attractions!

And there are some maps on the walls of the building!

There is also a Coral cave, jellyfish, an area that looks like a shipwreck, and more.

And yes, you will go under a tank and you will see sharks (among others) going over or swimming near you.

You are not seeing the huge tank here (the entrance) because the photo is not clear, unfortunately.

Sea Life Munich Sharks

For us, it was the first time in such a place (we have aquariums in Romania too, but smaller), and it was a nice experience. We spent an hour – or an hour and fifteen minutes there (we arrived not long before closing time).

And then we spent some time in the souvenir shop 🙂 We bought stones (yes, cheesy, I know :D) – but there are so many plushies and various objects to choose from 🙂

Check the closing time/schedule

We went there end of June, a weekday! – and the last entrance is one hour before closing. This means 4 PM (it closed at 5 PM).

But if you would check the schedule for August 17, a Saturday, you will see that it closes at 8 PM – so the last entrance is at 7 PM.

Therefore, check the schedule in advance, based on when you will be visiting – and plan your visit accordingly.

It all comes down to how many similar places you visited before and how passionate/interested you are.

You can visit it all in half an hour or spend a few hours here.

We had a little over an hour to spend here – but I would have loved to have more time!

Expect loud kids

Sea Life Munich hosts various events, and you may encounter groups engaged in different activities.

When we visited, there wasn’t such a tour, but there were two small groups of people (extended families) with children who were really loud (the parents didn’t tell them to be a bit more silent).

There are no windows

If you have issues with dark spaces and rooms with no windows, then you need to know what to expect. For us, being here was no issue (even if I am claustrophobic), but I thought I’d mention this aspect.

There is a restaurant/terrace outside

You can sit and relax more after your visit – enjoying a coffee, a juice, drinking some water or something else:) – but this closed when Sea Life closes!
