Munich in the Rain: What to Do on a Rainy Day in Munich – Museums, Castles, Pools, Cars & More

I can confidently say that Munich in the rain is mostly a planning problem. A light shower around Marienplatz is easy to handle, but a full wet day, a family trip, or prepaid tickets for somewhere outside the city need a different plan. Munich is famous for beer gardens, parks, Old Town walks, and long summer evenings, but the city also has excellent museums, palaces, car attractions, indoor pools, shopping areas, cafés, and family-friendly places that make a rainy day easy to fill.

I visited Munich with my family – I shared my Munich itinerary – and mostly had good weather, but we still had both light rain and one heavy rainy morning during the trip. We had fixed plans (a trip to Legoland for our son’s birthday – and that was the morning with pouring rain), but also more flexible days. Because I know how frustrating it can be to need ideas when the weather changes your plans, I am including below the best things to do in Munich when it rains, grouped by real activity type rather than as a long list of separate museums.

I chose to group things by activity because we all have different preferences and you will more easily find the best activities for you on a rainy day in Munich 🙂 Yes, the vacation can still be fun, entertaining or relaxing – rain doesn’t have to ruin your trip!

Best Museums in Munich When It Rains

Museums are the easiest choice when rain lasts more than an hour or two. Munich has many of them, but you do not need to turn a wet day into a museum marathon. Choose one large museum for a full day, or one museum area if you want more flexibility.

Deutsches Museum

Deutsches Museum - Aviation Air Force Helicopter

If I had to choose one place in Munich for a full rainy day with family, I would choose the Deutsches Museum.

It rained lightly on the day we visited, but that was already our planned museum day, so it did not bother us. I would not have chosen a park that day. Deutsches Museum, though, was perfect. We spent the whole day there, and it became one of the best places we visited in Munich.

This is a huge science and technology museum, so it is not only for people who usually love museums. We saw Foucault’s Pendulum, aviation, trains, robotics, optics, chemistry, atomic physics, musical instruments, astronautics, electronics, photography and film, and interactive sections. It is very good with children and teenagers because there is movement, sound, experiments, machines, and enough variety to avoid boredom.

Plan several hours. A full day is not too much if you like this type of place – we spent an entire day here, and I would go back in a heartbeat.

Art museums around the Pinakothek area

If you prefer art, choose the museum area around the Pinakothek museums. You may see it called Kunstareal, but the idea is this: several important art museums are close to each other, so you can stay in one area instead of crossing Munich in the rain.

The Alte Pinakothek is best known for European Old Masters. Pinakothek der Moderne covers modern art, design, architecture, and graphics. Museum Brandhorst focuses on modern and contemporary art. Lenbachhaus is also worth considering if you are interested in Munich’s art history and the Blue Rider movement.

I would choose one museum, maybe two if you really enjoy art. Trying to see everything in one wet afternoon can become tiring fast.

Other museums to consider

If you want something more specific, Munich also has museums for city history, Jewish culture, and serious historical topics. The NS-Dokumentationszentrum is an important visit, but it is not light entertainment and not the first place I would choose for younger children on a family trip.

If you are going toward Nymphenburg Palace, check whether nearby museums such as Museum Mensch und Natur, the Marstallmuseum, or the porcelain collection fit your plan and are open when you visit. These are useful additions only if you are already in that area.

If You Like Cars: BMW, Sea Life Nearby, and Motorworld München

Munich is very good for car fans (I am one of them), and this is one area where a rainy day can actually fit the trip nicely. You can choose the BMW area near Olympiapark or go farther out to Motorworld München.

BMW Welt and BMW Museum

BMW Museum - Formula car
BMW Museum

BMW Welt and BMW Museum are good choices if you travel with teenagers, car fans, design fans, or anyone interested in BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce, engines, motorcycles, and automotive history.

BMW Welt can be visited more casually. BMW Museum needs more time if you want to read and follow the exhibits properly. We visited both with our son, and it gave our Munich itinerary a more modern day after palaces, churches, and classic city sights.

Sea Life Munich near the BMW area

Sea Life Munich has Germany's largest variety of sharks.

Sea Life Munich is also in the Olympiapark area. It is not literally next door to BMW Welt, and there is still walking involved, so keep that in mind if the rain is heavy.

Sea Life is better for younger children or as a shorter indoor stop. I would combine it with BMW Welt or BMW Museum if the timing works, rather than making it the only plan for the whole day.

Motorworld München

Muhammad Ali’s Car - Motorworld Munchen Free Attraction in Munich
Muhammad Ali’s Car

Motorworld München is a different car-focused visit. We went there with our son after the Residenz, and for us it was memorable because of the classic cars, Formula 1 connection, cars for sale, and the whole atmosphere of the place.

It is not in the center, so plan transport properly. I would choose it if cars are a genuine interest in your family, not only because you need to be indoors. As a note: there is walking involved from the metro, so if there is pouring rain and you are not using a taxi… you will need at least an umbrella.

Palaces and Historic Interiors

If you want Munich history rather than science, art, or cars, use a wet day for palace interiors. This is also a good choice if you are already planning an Old Town day and the rain makes long outdoor walks less appealing.

Munich Residenz

beautiful bedroom at Munich Residenz Palace

The Residenz Palace is central, large, and very useful when you want to stay near Old Town but spend a good amount of time indoors.

Inside, you can visit the Residence Museum, the Treasury, and, if open, the Cuvilliés Theatre. I visited the Residenz with our son, and we spent a few hours here. We didn’t book the guided tour, but we had audioguides. It deserves time, especially if you like palace rooms, decorative details, and Bavarian history.

It pairs well with central churches, cafés, and a shorter Old Town walk if the rain is light.

Nymphenburg Palace

Nymphenburg Palace is another major palace in Munich. It was the summer residence of the Bavarian rulers, and the palace interiors can make sense in bad weather.

The important distinction is the park. Nymphenburg is famous not only for the palace but also for the gardens, canals, and large outdoor grounds. In light rain, you can still visit the palace and add nearby museums or a café if open. In heavy rain, I would think twice before planning a visit that depends on enjoying the gardens.

Choose Nymphenburg on a rainy day if you specifically want palace interiors and are comfortable with the transport and walking involved.

Indoor Pools, Swimming, and Thermal Baths

A rainy day does not always need to mean another museum. If you are in Munich for several days, an indoor pool or thermal bath can be a good break from sightseeing, especially with children.

Public indoor pools in Munich

Munich has public indoor pools operated by SWM / M-Bäder, including well-known options such as Müller’sches Volksbad, Olympia-Schwimmhalle, Nordbad, Michaelibad, Westbad, Südbad, and others. Check the official public pools page for current opening times and locations before planning around one.

Müller’sches Volksbad is the most interesting one for visitors who also care about architecture, because it is a historic public bath. Olympia-Schwimmhalle can be the best option if you are already near Olympiapark. Other pools may be better depending on where you stay.

Bring swimwear, check whether the pool you want has family facilities or sauna areas, and do not assume all opening hours are the same every day.

Therme Erding near Munich

Therme Erding is outside Munich, but it can work if you want a bigger waterpark/spa day rather than more city sightseeing. The official Therme Erding page lists thermal baths, slides, a wave pool, spa areas, and sauna facilities.

I would not squeeze it into a short Munich visit. But if you have several days, bad weather, and children or teenagers who would love slides and pools, it can be worth considering. Check tickets, transport, opening hours, and whether advance booking is needed. We didn’t visit – but it is on our list for the next trip to Munich.

Shopping, Malls, and Covered Places

Shopping is not the most original Munich activity, but it is useful when the rain is heavy, someone needs a break, or you forgot something practical. Or if you just like seeing malls – I like to book some time to check them out when I travel.

Central shopping streets and covered passages

Kaufingerstraße and Neuhauser Straße are the main central shopping streets between Marienplatz and Karlsplatz. In light rain, you can combine them with Old Town sights, cafés, churches, and the Residenz.

Fünf Höfe is better if you want a more elegant covered shopping and café stop in the center. Stachus Passagen is more practical, especially if you are near Karlsplatz and want shops, food, or shelter without leaving the center.

Malls when the rain is heavy

If the rain is heavy and you want convenience, look at larger shopping centers such as Olympia-Einkaufszentrum, Pasing Arcaden, or Riem Arcaden, depending on where you are staying.

This is not my first recommendation for a first Munich visit, but it can help if you are traveling with children, need food and bathrooms, want to buy rain gear, or simply need an easy indoor break.

Markets and Food Stops When It Rains

Markets are tricky in rain. They can still be enjoyable in light rain, but a downpour changes the experience quickly.

Viktualienmarkt in light rain

Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s beloved outdoor food market

Viktualienmarkt is worth visiting if the rain is light and you are already central. You can browse food stalls, buy snacks, and still get a feel for one of Munich’s most famous market areas.

In heavy rain, I would not make it the main plan. Wet bags, umbrellas, crowds, and food browsing do not always mix well.

Cafés, beer halls, and indoor food stops

A rainy day is a good time for a longer lunch, a proper coffee break, or a traditional beer hall instead of a beer garden.

Hofbräuhaus is famous and very touristy, but it is central and indoors. Other beer halls and restaurants may be better if you want something less crowded. Around Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz, the museum areas, and main transport stops, it is easy to add food breaks without making the day feel wasted.

Other Indoor Things to Do in Munich When It Rains

If you have already visited the main museums or the rain lasts more than one day, these extra ideas can help.

Churches and historic buildings in the center

Theatinerkirche, also known as the Theatine Church of St. Cajetan - my Munich itinerary for 5 days in Munich
Theatinerkirche, also known as the Theatine Church of St. Cajetan

Frauenkirche, Asamkirche, Theatinerkirche, and St. Peter’s Church can be useful short stops in light rain. They fit best with Old Town, the Residenz, cafés, and shopping streets.

I would not build a whole day only around churches unless that is your interest, but they are very easy to add when you are already in the center.

Cinemas, concerts, and evening shows

If rain starts in the evening, check concerts, performances, cinemas, or events happening during your stay. This is not usually the main plan for a first Munich trip, but it can be useful if you are tired after sightseeing and do not want another museum.

NOTE: and the caps are intended. Make sure you check to see if there are English subtitles for the movies. In Germany, movies are usually dubbed, so if you don’t speak German… you get the idea 😀

Escape rooms, bowling, climbing gyms, and indoor family activities

These are useful if you travel with teenagers or if bad weather lasts more than one day. For escape rooms, check language options before booking if you do not speak German. I would treat these as backup ideas after you have considered the Munich-specific places first.

What I Would Save for Better Weather

Some Munich places can be visited in light rain, but I would not use a heavy rain day for them unless you have no other choice.

I would save the English Garden for better weather. The same goes for beer gardens, long Old Town photo walks, tower views if visibility is poor, Olympic Park outdoor walks, and Nymphenburg gardens.

Viktualienmarkt is fine in light rain, but not ideal in a downpour. Outdoor day trips also need more caution unless the tickets are already bought or the forecast improves later in the day.

What If It Rains on a Fixed Outdoor Plan?

Lego Harbour Cruise Legoland Günzburg Legoland Germany

This happened to us with Legoland Deutschland. The photo above is taken just after the rain stopped – and this (the boats on the lake) was actually the first activity we tried.

We had planned it as our son’s birthday gift. The tickets were already bought, the day was fixed, and changing everything at the last minute would have been complicated. That morning, it poured.

The good part was that the rain stopped around 11 a.m. By noon, people at Legoland started opening the attractions, and the day still worked.

So if it rains before a prepaid outdoor plan, check the hourly forecast and official attraction updates before giving up. A bad morning is not always a bad day. Also check refund or date-change rules before the trip, not when everyone is already stressed.

How I Would Choose Based on Who You Travel With

With young children: Sea Life Munich, Deutsches Museum, indoor pools, and BMW Welt if they like cars.

With teenagers: Deutsches Museum, BMW Museum, Motorworld München, Therme Erding, or an escape room if they need a break from sightseeing.

As a couple: Residenz, the Pinakothek museums, cafés, Fünf Höfe, Müller’sches Volksbad, or Therme Erding if you want a spa-style day.

Solo traveler: Deutsches Museum, art museums, Residenz, cafés, central shopping passages, or a public pool if you want something less touristy.

If you only have one day in Munich: stay central. Choose the Residenz, churches, cafés, shopping passages, and maybe one museum depending on the weather.

Practical Tips for Munich in the Rain

Use public transport instead of forcing long walks. Munich is easy to move around by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, and bus, and my guide to public transportation in Munich can help if you are planning routes before your trip.

Check opening days before choosing a museum or palace. Mondays, holidays, temporary closures, and special events can affect your plan.

Bring a compact umbrella or rain jacket. If you are considering indoor pools, bring swimwear or check whether you can realistically buy what you need nearby.

Choose one area per wet day. Deutsches Museum, Old Town and the Residenz, the BMW/Sea Life area, the art museum area, Nymphenburg, or Motorworld München all work better when you do not try to combine too many places far apart.

If you are still planning the full trip, keep one flexible indoor day in your Munich itinerary. I also included more planning details in my Munich travel tips.

What to Do in Munich When It Rains: Short Answer

For a full rainy day in Munich, choose Deutsches Museum, the Residenz, the Pinakothek art museum area, BMW Welt/BMW Museum, Motorworld München, an indoor pool, or Therme Erding if you want a larger waterpark/spa trip outside the city.

For light rain in the center, keep Old Town but add churches, cafés, covered shopping passages, and the Residenz. For heavy rain, choose one main place and avoid moving across Munich repeatedly.

With children or teenagers, I would first consider Deutsches Museum, BMW Museum, Sea Life Munich, Motorworld München, indoor pools, or Therme Erding, depending on age and interests.

Conclusion

Munich has enough to do in the rain that you do not need to waste the day, but you do need to choose carefully. Some places are simply better with good weather, especially the English Garden, beer gardens, tower views, outdoor markets in heavy rain, and palace gardens.

From our trip, the Deutsches Museum was the easiest rainy-day success. The light rain did not affect the visit at all, and we spent the whole day there. Legoland was the opposite situation: a fixed outdoor plan with a terrible rainy morning. That day still worked because the weather improved and attractions opened later.

So my honest recommendation is simple: use museums, palaces, cars, pools, cafés, and shopping areas when the rain is steady. Keep parks, gardens, and long walks for better weather when you can. And if you have prepaid tickets, check the forecast and official updates before changing everything.

Is the Deutsches Museum good for a rainy day in Munich?

Yes. We visited the Deutsches Museum on a light-rain day, and it was ideal because we had already planned to spend the day there. It is large enough for several hours, with science, technology, aviation, trains, optics, robotics, and interactive sections.

What can you do in Munich when it rains with teenagers?

Teenagers may enjoy Deutsches Museum, BMW Museum, BMW Welt, Motorworld München, Therme Erding, escape rooms, or indoor sports activities. It depends on whether they prefer science, cars, pools, or something more active.

Are there indoor swimming pools in Munich?

Yes. Munich has public indoor pools, including Müller’sches Volksbad, Olympia-Schwimmhalle, Nordbad, Michaelibad, Westbad, and others. Check current opening hours before going because schedules can vary.

Is Therme Erding worth visiting from Munich on a rainy day?

Therme Erding can be worth it if you want a full or half-day waterpark, thermal bath, or spa experience outside Munich. It is not a quick city stop, so check transport, tickets, and timing before adding it to your plan.

In heavy rain, I would avoid the English Garden, beer gardens, tower views with poor visibility, long outdoor walks, Nymphenburg gardens, and repeated cross-city transfers for short stops.

Can you still visit Legoland Deutschland if it rains?

Rain does not automatically mean your Legoland Deutschland day is lost. On our visit, it poured in the morning, stopped around 11 a.m., and by noon attractions started opening. Check the hourly forecast and official attraction updates before changing a prepaid plan.
