I love December! Christmas carols, decorated streets, Christmas markets, finding the right gifts for loved ones, Saint Nicholas Day, and the possibility of snow are just some of the things that make this month special to me. But even when I know exactly what I want to celebrate, finding the right words isn’t always easy. I’ve had plenty of moments when I’ve stared at a beautiful photo or a blank greeting card and couldn’t think of anything interesting to write.
That’s why I created this collection of December quotes, with beautiful sayings about the month, inspirational messages, short Instagram captions, funny lines, Christmas greetings, and quotes from famous writers and poets. I’ve also included words for December birthdays, December 31, work messages, and people celebrating the month in summer.
Some of these quotations come from well-known literary works, while the sayings without an author are original lines written for this collection. I’ve kept the mood positive because there’s already enough negativity around us, and December offers so much to celebrate.

Psss: If you like December and winter in general, I also have for you some fun December trivia, an interesting winter trivia article, New Year trivia, plus New Year traditions from various countries and interesting Christmas celebrations across the globe. I also have a few Christmas-focused trivia pieces: one on Christmas movies, one on Christmas songs, and general Christmas trivia.
Famous December Quotes From Writers, Poets, and Other Well-Known People
December has inspired some beautiful passages in literature. Christina Rossetti imagined the month arriving with evergreens and an invitation to celebrate; Oliver Herford found hope in its darkest days; and Charles Dickens gave us some of the most beloved words about Christmas.
I’ve included the original works wherever possible, so you can see where the quotations come from. Some mention December directly, while others focus on Christmas, winter, kindness, or welcoming the new year.
“Nay, no closed doors for me,
But open doors and open hearts and glee
To welcome young and old.” – Christina Rossetti, The Months: A Pageant.
In this poem, December enters carrying evergreens and festive decorations. Rossetti gives the month a wonderfully cheerful personality, and I particularly like the idea of welcoming everyone with open hearts.
“Dimmest and brightest month am I;
My short days end, my lengthening days begin.” – Christina Rossetti, The Months: A Pageant.
“What matters more or less sun in the sky,
When all is sun within?” – Christina Rossetti, The Months: A Pageant.
These lines are from the same poem, which you can read in Rossetti’s collected poetry. The warmth she describes comes from happiness and celebration, even when the winter days are short.
“Chill December brings the sleet,
Blazing fire and Christmas treat.” – Sara Coleridge, The Garden Year (1834).
This is one of my favorite famous December sayings because it captures the pleasure of a warm home and Christmas celebrations in just a few words. The original poem, The Garden Year, describes every month of the year in a short couplet.
“I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December,
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.” – Oliver Herford, Hope.
“We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September.” – Oliver Herford, Hope.
Both quotations belong to Herford’s short poem about a bird singing in December. I like the second one for a message of encouragement, especially when someone needs a reminder that brighter days are ahead.
“A kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time.” – Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol (1843).
Scrooge’s nephew, Fred, says these words while describing Christmas. The longer passage celebrates goodwill and generosity, and it’s worth reading in the original A Christmas Carol.
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” – Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol (1843).
“God bless us, every one!” – Tiny Tim, in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (1843).
“It was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well.” — Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol (1843).
“The only gift is a portion of thyself.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson, Gifts.
Emerson’s words are especially suitable for a Christmas card or a message thanking someone for their generosity. They’re also a reminder that attention, affection, and time can be meaningful gifts.
“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson, Works and Days.
“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit.” – Henry David Thoreau, Walden (1854).
Although Thoreau wasn’t writing specifically about December, his advice fits anyone who wants to enjoy the month as it comes, whether that means holiday celebrations, quiet mornings, or traveling somewhere new.
“The best is yet to be.” – Robert Browning, Rabbi Ben Ezra (1864).
This short quotation is a lovely choice for an inspirational December caption or a New Year’s message. It expresses optimism without needing a long explanation.
“Ring out the old, ring in the new.” – Alfred, Lord Tennyson, In Memoriam A.H.H. (1850).
“Ring, happy bells, across the snow.” – Alfred, Lord Tennyson, In Memoriam A.H.H. (1850).
Both lines are from Tennyson’s famous New Year poem. They’re especially appropriate for December 31, when people say goodbye to one year and look forward to another.
“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?” – L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables (1908).
Anne Shirley’s optimism makes this a lovely quotation for the final days of December, as the new year approaches.
“Forever – is composed of Nows –” – Emily Dickinson, Forever – is composed of Nows –.
December can be full of plans for next year, but Dickinson’s words remind us to enjoy the present, too.
“There is no charm equal to tenderness of heart.” – Jane Austen, Emma (1815).
Austen’s line works better in a heartfelt holiday card, a thank-you message, or a December birthday greeting. It’s also a beautiful expression of what matters in our relationships.

“Goodbye to another memorable year. I’m ready to see what’s waiting around the corner.”
“One last toast to this year’s happiest moments.”
Different countries have fascinating customs for welcoming January 1, from eating twelve grapes in Spain to special foods and good-luck rituals. I’ve collected many of these New Year’s traditions from around the world, fun to discover before the countdown.
December Birthday Quotes and Wishes
A December birthday deserves its own celebration, even when Christmas and New Year’s plans are filling everyone’s calendars. Whether you’re sending a card to a friend, writing a message for your partner, or posting a birthday photograph, these quotes give the occasion some extra attention.
“Born in December, celebrated all year.”
“Happy birthday! December is lucky to have you.”
“Your birthday deserves its own celebration, no matter how many holidays are on the calendar.”
“A December birthday means even more reasons to gather, laugh, and celebrate.”
“I hope your birthday is filled with everything you love, including a cake you don’t have to share with Christmas.”
“May your birthday bring you wonderful surprises and another year of unforgettable experiences.”
“The holiday season is special, but today we’re celebrating you.”
“Happy December birthday! Here’s to your next year being full of adventures, happiness, and good news.”
“Some people are born at the perfect time of year to make December even more memorable.”
“Your birthday is one more reason to love December.”
Two famous literary figures also had December birthdays: Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830, and Jane Austen on December 16, 1775. Their quotations in the famous-writers section are lovely choices for birthday cards, particularly if the recipient enjoys literature.
December Quotes for Summer and Warm-Weather Celebrations
Not everyone associates December with snow and winter coats. In Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and other Southern Hemisphere destinations, December is summer, bringing long days, outdoor meals, beach trips, and warm-weather Christmas celebrations.
I wanted to include some December quotes that work for these occasions too, because beautiful December memories don’t require a snowy landscape.
“December sunshine, long afternoons, and plans that involve the sea.”
“Who says Christmas needs snow? I’ve got sunshine and plenty of reasons to celebrate.”
“A summer December means making the most of every beautiful evening.”
“Christmas decorations and beach days make a surprisingly wonderful combination.”
“December is looking bright, sunny, and full of possibilities.”
“A warm December day is an invitation to spend more time outside.”
“Here’s to December sunsets, outdoor celebrations, and new summer memories.”
“My kind of December includes sunshine, good company, and somewhere lovely to go.”
If you’re dreaming of a warm-weather December trip, there are plenty of places that don’t feel like December at all, including destinations where the usual winter holiday atmosphere gives way to warm days and outdoor adventures.
December Quotes for Work, Colleagues, and Professional Messages
December messages for colleagues, clients, and business contacts can be warm without becoming too personal. A thoughtful greeting may be more appropriate than a famous quotation, especially when you want to acknowledge someone’s work or wish them well for the coming year.
“Thank you for your collaboration throughout the year. Wishing you a wonderful December and a successful year ahead.”
“May December bring you well-deserved moments of celebration and exciting opportunities for the coming year.”
“Wishing you a happy holiday season and thanking you for everything we’ve accomplished together.”
“Here’s to a productive year, valuable partnerships, and more wonderful achievements ahead.”
“Thank you for your support and dedication. I hope you enjoy a lovely December and a great start to the new year.”
“Wishing you a festive season filled with happiness and a new year full of rewarding opportunities.”
For a professional email, I’d usually choose one short, sincere message and adapt it to the relationship. A greeting to a longtime colleague can be more personal, while a message to a new client may call for a slightly more formal tone.
How to Choose the Right December Quote for a Card, Caption, or Message
For an Instagram photo, a short December quote is usually enough. A festive street scene might suit “December looks lovely from here,” while a family photo deserves something more personal. If the picture already tells most of the story, you don’t need an elaborate caption.
For greeting cards, I like pairing a beautiful quote with a message written specifically for the recipient. You might choose a line from Dickens or Christina Rossetti and then add something about a memory you share, a tradition you’re looking forward to, or a plan to meet during the holidays.
When sending a December wish to someone you don’t know very well, a simple, positive greeting is usually the safest choice. You can also use holiday-neutral wording when you’re unsure which celebrations a person observes.
And if you’re looking for something to say on December 31, choose a line that fits the occasion. A funny message works for friends, an encouraging quote fits a personal reflection, and a warm expression of thanks may be ideal for colleagues or business partners.
A Final December Wish
I hope you’ve found a December quote that feels right for the occasion, whether you’re welcoming the month, sharing a photograph, celebrating a birthday, sending Christmas wishes, or looking forward to the new year.
I genuinely love December, and I hope it gives you many reasons to feel the same. Enjoy your favorite traditions, make time for the people who matter, and celebrate the good things, including the little ones that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Do you have a favorite December quote or a saying you always associate with this time of year? I’d love to know!
