A Newlywed Couple Tried a Viral Flight Hack on Their Honeymoon – And Triggered a Massive Debate. Other Travelers Had Wild Stories of Their Own

What would flying for your honeymoon make you do? Would you risk it all on a viral airplane seating hack, knowing that if it didn’t work, you and your new husband or wife could spend the flight with a stranger sitting between you?

For me, it would be the window seat for me and my husband next to me, because I’d want us to sit together and be as comfortable as possible on the way there. Sure, having the whole row to ourselves would be even better, but as we all know, most economy rows have three seats, not two.

One newlywed couple decided to take a gamble with their seats. Instead of booking two seats next to each other, they followed a popular airplane seating hack, hoping it wouldn’t backfire, and filmed what happened on their honeymoon flight, including the moment they discovered whether the risk was worth it.

When I saw the video, I immediately asked myself if I would take that chance. Then I wanted to see if others had used the same hack and what happened to them, and I found several interesting cases, plus plenty of comments and opinions – the Internet is truly divided on this one! – and even stories from passengers who ended up sort of paying the price when couples used this strategy. Depending on your perspective, some of these stories are funny, while others sound horrifying.

What Is This Viral Seat Hack – And What Happens When Things Don’t Go as Planned?

The idea isn’t new, and it’s very simple: two people traveling together book the window and aisle seats in the same row and leave the middle seat available. Because middle seats aren’t exactly the most popular seats on an airplane, they’re hoping nobody chooses it and they eventually get the whole row to themselves without actually paying for the third seat.

If someone does end up in the middle, the couple can offer that passenger either the window or aisle seat and sit together instead. It sounds like a fairly simple gamble, and unlike some of the more questionable viral plane hacks we’ve seen online, the risk here is mainly that it simply won’t work.

But what happens when someone actually gets that middle seat? You might think one person would simply offer to swap, especially when the alternative is spending several hours talking and passing things over a complete stranger. Apparently, that isn’t always what happens, and some of the things that have actually happened when this gamble failed are probably not what you’d expect.

They Offered Him the Aisle Seat. Then the Window. He Still Stayed in the Middle

Writer and director Zack Bornstein found out how this particular gamble could end during a 5.5-hour flight with his girlfriend. A passenger sat between them, so Bornstein offered him his aisle seat, but the man preferred to stay in the middle. They then offered him the window seat as well, and he declined that too, leaving the couple separated for the entire flight.

Bornstein shared the experience online in December 2022, and the story quickly started a heated debate. He later answered some of the questions people were asking and said the passenger didn’t appear nervous about flying and had eaten three full bags of salmon jerky during the 5.5-hour journey.

Quite a few people defended the man in the middle because, after all, it was his seat. Bornstein and his girlfriend had chosen the window-and-aisle strategy and the gamble hadn’t worked, much like passengers in other airplane seat disputes who have made it clear that if they selected or paid for a particular seat, they don’t feel obligated to move simply because somebody else would prefer a different arrangement.

But there is another version of this situation. What if the person in the middle would be perfectly happy to move, but the couple on either side doesn’t want to switch?

He Spent Eight Hours Between a Husband and Wife Who Refused to Move

Flight attendant Rich Henderson once found himself in the middle seat between a husband and wife while he was traveling as a passenger. According to Best Life, Henderson said the wife immediately told him, “We’re not moving, so don’t ask.”

And they didn’t. The couple wore noise-canceling headphones but continued gesturing to each other and passing things across him during the flight. At one point, they even spilled wine on Henderson.

Looking back, Henderson said he could laugh about what happened, but he hadn’t enjoyed it at the time. And judging by the stories people shared under the newlyweds’ current video, being stuck between two people who are traveling together but refuse to sit together isn’t nearly as rare as you might hope.

So, after seeing what can happen when this gamble goes very wrong, what happened to the newlyweds who tried it on their honeymoon?

The Newlyweds Finally Found Out Whether Their Gamble Had Worked

It worked – the middle seat stayed empty, and they got exactly the extra space they had hoped for.

In the TikTok video, the man sits by the window with the empty middle seat beside him, and later she has enough room to stretch her legs across the seats and sleep more comfortably. At the end, they’re clearly delighted with the result, and he smiles and claps while “IT WORKED” appears across the video.

The overlay text explains exactly what they had tried and what they were prepared to do if somebody had taken the seat:

“We tried the window and seat plane hack on our flight and it worked!! 😂😂 best flight ever and I was able to stretch my legs and sleep across the seats!

Obvs If this didn’t work we would just have been separate but we watch our own movies anyway lol”

For them, there was no awkward conversation with a middle-seat passenger and no need to negotiate a swap. They got an entire row between the two of them, more room for their legs and space to sleep, which is probably exactly why this seating trick keeps coming back online.

As with the check-in chicken airline trend, though, a big element of luck is involved. A strategy can look brilliant when the flight isn’t full and considerably less clever when every seat ends up occupied.

One Person Said They Purposely Book the Middle Seat – And Got 43 Replies

The comments under the honeymoon video soon moved beyond whether the newlyweds had been lucky, and one person’s admission alone attracted 43 replies: “if I’m travelling by myself I purposely book those middle seats and refuse to switch”

People pointed out that this means deliberately choosing what many passengers consider the least comfortable seat on the row. “You’re purposely booking yourself a worse seat to spite other people? Might I recommend therapy?” one person replied, while another wrote, “well your just a ray of sunshine aren’t you.” Someone else asked, “That’s the most uncomfortable for you though, so idk who’s winning”

The original commenter had an answer for that too: “me. it’s worse for them when I have to get up to the toilet 10 times a flight.”

Another traveler had a completely different solution and wrote, “Me and my husband always book the aisle seats in the same row. THAT is a better hack I promise”

Others focused on whether the strategy can realistically work very often when so many flights are full. “if its a full flight it would get taken,” one person wrote, while another said, “This won’t work most of the time bc so many flights are overbooked and the middle gets assigned so someone who didn’t select a seat.” Someone else was even more direct: “It’s not a « hack » you just got lucky your plane isn’t fully booked”

But What If the Middle Seat Is Filled and the Couple Still Won’t Swap?

This was where another argument really took off, because for many people the problem isn’t booking a window and aisle and hoping for an empty seat. The problem starts when someone ends up between the couple and they keep acting like there isn’t another person sitting there.

One commenter wrote, “If the middle seat gets filled AND one of you doesn’t switch with them, then you guys are the worst type of people. Nothing is worse than sitting between a couple who talks over you and passes food over you. It’s SO rude.”

That brought plenty of responses. “Maybe the couple should book the seat next to each other in the first place??” one person wrote, while another asked, “in the first place why would you wanna sit the worse seat ( the middle seat) just to spite the couple”

Other people pointed out that someone booking a middle seat online can’t know who the people on either side are. “When booking seats nobody knows if they are splitting a couple or not. Tf?” one person wrote. Another asked, “What if that was the only best available seat?” while someone else added, “Have you ever been on a plane? Are you aware you can’t know who are the people sitting next to you?”

The initial commenter then clarified: “no shit right. im talking about the context when youre on the airplane and got sat between a couple.”

And there were people in the comments who didn’t have to imagine what that would be like because it had already happened to them.

Some Passengers Have Actually Spent Hours Trapped Between Couples

One traveler shared a much longer story about a flight to Bali after spending years apart from family: “I absolutely hate this. I paid an extreme amount of money to meet my family that I hadn’t been able to see for close to 4.5 years in Bali right after Corona was ending. My family is scattered over 3 continents. I got stuck middle row on the plane with the mom and her 5 yo on my left and the dad on my right. I realized they were family about 20min in & asked the dad to switch seats. He refused, and I got stuck with the kid kicking me most of the time on my left side, and them reaching over me for the majority of the flight. Never again.”

Another person described almost the same situation on a six-hour flight: “My husband got put in the middle between a husband and wife on our last flight and they didn’t want to switch him 💀 so he sat in the middle of them for 6 hours 😅”

A third commenter had a request for anyone trying the window-and-aisle strategy: “If yall do this, let us in the middle know so we can swap seats. Soooo annoying having you guys talk over and swap food, snacks, drinks, electronics, etc. thanks.”

It’s the sort of airplane passenger behavior that can turn a flight into a story someone remembers for years, even when nothing more serious happens. We’ve seen the same thing with everything from people invading someone else’s space to passengers becoming irritated by what the stranger sitting beside them is doing, including a recent viral incident where a complaint about chewing turned into a much larger argument online.

Other Travelers Say They’ve Been Using the Trick for Decades

Not everyone considered the strategy rude or pointless. One person simply wrote, “Been doing that for 30 years almost always works,” while another explained what they do when somebody does get the middle seat: “we always book a window and aisle seat sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t we usually ask the person who gets the middle seat if they want window seat and I take the middle seat but its always a good risk to take”

For that couple, the gamble is fairly straightforward. If nobody takes the middle, they get the extra space. If somebody does, they offer that passenger the window seat and one member of the couple moves into the middle, so the stranger actually ends up with what many travelers would consider the better seat.

Then one comment stood out after reading so many complaints about ending up in the middle: “I usually choose the middle seat because I like to get to know new people.”

The Same Gamble Has Worked on an 11-Hour Flight

The honeymooners aren’t the only travelers who’ve gotten the result they wanted. In 2024, family travel creator Jess Darrington shared another example after her family tried the same basic strategy on an 11-hour flight from Amsterdam to Salt Lake City.

They booked four seats split across two rows, taking the window and aisle seats and leaving the middles available. Nobody took those seats, so the family ended up with two complete rows for the 11-hour journey.

Darrington said she had tried the trick several times over the years and had seen different results. She was very clear about the part that sometimes gets lost when people call something a “hack”: the empty seat is never guaranteed, and if somebody does get the middle, you have to accept that your gamble didn’t work.

Her preferred solution is to offer the middle-seat passenger either the window or aisle, allowing the couple or family to sit together. Of course, as Zack Bornstein discovered on his 5.5-hour flight, even that solution can produce an unexpected result if the person sitting between you would rather keep the middle.

Would You Risk It?

I still don’t know that I would. I love the idea of having an empty seat beside me and considerably more room on a long flight, but I think I’d rather know that my husband was sitting next to me than spend boarding wondering whether someone was about to appear and take that middle seat.

For the newlyweds in this video, though, the gamble couldn’t have gone much better. Nobody took the middle; they got the extra room they wanted on their honeymoon flight, and judging by their reaction at the end, they were very happy they’d taken the chance.
