Heroes’ Cross on the Caraiman Peak, Romania is the Largest Cross in the World at High Altitude

Taking a hike on the Caraiman and seeing the cross places on top of the peak up-close is an amazing experience – all my friends who love hiking told me that. I didn’t had the chance to stand just a few meters away from this cross due to a knee problem, but I did see it on a numerous occasions. The last time I was in the area it was a foggy cloudy day, a March day with snow melting. But the Caraiman cross stood tall and impressed me again with its grandeur. A news I read yesterday stated that this impressive monument entered the Guinness World Record and was recognized as the largest summit cross placed at high altitude.

The Heroes’ Cross was built under King Ferdinand and Queen Mary of Romania between 1926 and 1928 on Caraiman Peak at an altitude of 2,291 m located in Romania, in the Bucegi Mountains of the Southern Carpathians. This is an impressive monument with a height of 36 metres and it is dedicated to the memory of lost soldiers during World War I.

I am proud to see that another monument from my country made it to Guiness Book. (the photos are from the last trip in the area described here).
