Some of my favorite holiday memories are simply about being together. I’ve spent Christmases, New Year’s Eves, Easters, birthdays and other celebrations with family and friends, and the evenings I remember best aren’t always the ones with the biggest plans. Usually there was food, a lot of talking and something simple that kept everyone around the table a little longer.

Finding a game that works when you have different ages and personalities in the same room isn’t always that easy, though. You don’t necessarily want complicated rules, a pile of props or one person spending half the evening explaining what everybody else is supposed to do.

That’s one reason Would You Rather works so well. You get two choices, you have to pick one, and then everyone wants to know why you chose it. I kept the scenarios different throughout the list, so you won’t find the same vampire-versus-werewolf question reworded three times or a later question that simply reverses an earlier one.

You can use the full list at a Halloween party, choose a shorter round for family or friends, or pick questions for a classroom, teens, adults or just two people. If your group prefers answers with actual right and wrong choices, you can switch later to these Halloween trivia questions.

How to Play Halloween Would You Rather

The basic rule couldn’t be much simpler: read both options and everyone has to choose one. No third option and no changing the question to make the answer easier.

Have everyone choose before anyone explains their reasoning. One very convincing person can influence half the room if they speak first. Once the answers are locked in, ask why – especially when the group is split.

For a fast round, give everyone about five seconds to choose. For harder questions, write A or B on small slips of paper and reveal the answers together. With a larger group, people can move to opposite sides of the room. If you like the format for road trips and vacations too, these travel Would You Rather questions work in much the same way.

For a mixed group, I’d start here. The atmosphere changes here. These spooky Halloween Would You Rather questions use dark rooms, strange sounds, old buildings and things that aren’t quite where they should be. They’re scary Halloween questions without gore, so the tension comes from imagining the situation rather than from making the choices disturbing.

I’ve always found controlled scares easier to enjoy than being genuinely frightened, which is one reason the science behind why we enjoy being scared is so interesting. In these questions, you’re still safely in control – even when the imagined situation says otherwise.

The last 25 are hard Halloween Would You Rather questions because neither choice gives you an easy way out. You shouldn’t need obscure horror knowledge to understand them. The difficulty comes from choosing between knowledge and uncertainty, safety and curiosity, control and consequences.

For adults, teens, couples or friends who like debating the answer, this is probably the strongest section to slow down on. Read the whole question, have everyone choose, and only then let people defend their decision.
