I have written before about travelers who suddenly discovered that someone else could enter their hotel room or cruise cabin, even when they believed they had complete privacy and the doors were closed. But today’s story… beats them.

In a previous article, I asked you to imagine taking a shower in your cruise cabin and suddenly realizing two men had entered while you were completely undressed. That’s what a woman traveling alone aboard a cruise ship said happened to her when two crew members came into her stateroom to replace balcony furniture. She hadn’t requested maintenance or received warning, and she said the men didn’t respond when she called out from the bathroom. What happened afterward led to complaints, a series of videos the passenger shared, and a recorded conversation with the company. Her account of the cruise cabin privacy incident raised questions about how crew members enter occupied cabins and what passengers can do when their privacy is violated.

In another disturbing incident, a mother staying at a hotel with her daughter was in their room after midnight when someone suddenly unlocked the door from outside. The strangers had a working hotel key card, and only the additional swing-bar lock prevented them from opening the door completely. The woman later learned that the hotel had apparently issued another guest a key to her room, despite her and her daughter already occupying it. She confronted hotel staff about the mistake, but their response raised even more concerns. The hotel key-card incident prompted questions about how hotels assign rooms and what happens when a guest’s security is compromised.

Both situations were frightening to read about. But the incident I’m sharing today involves something else entirely, and I find it difficult to imagine how I would react if I were in the couple’s position. Plus, the explanation he offered is…. well… unexpected (to put it mildly).

What Happened Inside the Couple’s Hotel Room?

The incident occurred during the early hours of October 3, 2026, at a hotel in Santanyí, a municipality on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

According to Europa Press, citing information released by Spain’s Guardia Civil, the couple was sleeping in the same bed when a 20-year-old German tourist allegedly entered their room without permission.

He hadn’t used the main hotel room entrance. Investigators said the man entered through the sliding door leading to the terrace.

There was no evidence that he had forced any doors or locks, and no belongings were reported stolen.

Once inside, however, the man allegedly approached the sleeping couple in a way that immediately turned the intrusion into a frightening confrontation.

What He Did Is Outrageous

According to the Guardia Civil’s account, the man allegedly lunged at the woman, who was asleep beside her husband.

She pushed him away, and her husband helped her remove the intruder from the room.

The couple then took him to the hotel’s reception area, where employees kept him until officers arrived.

Imagine waking up in an unfamiliar hotel room to find an unknown man approaching you in bed. You don’t know whether he’s confused, intoxicated, or deliberately targeting you. And you have only moments to decide how to react. For me, this would be a complete nightmare!

According to Última Hora, Guardia Civil officers from Santanyí responded to the hotel after the incident was reported.

They found the young man visibly intoxicated and speaking incoherently.

When officers questioned him about why he’d entered an occupied hotel room in the middle of the night, he reportedly offered an unexpected explanation.

Police Questioned the Tourist About His Actions

The 20-year-old reportedly told officers he had entered the couple’s hotel room because of a challenge he’d seen on a mobile phone application.

Here I have to pause a bit. Because, while I think it can be true, it is still difficult for me to understand how someone could follow such dares and apps. Yes, I am very familiar with the trends that circulated online and affected (and injured and led to deaths) kids – frightening experiences. But I thought we were past them. And I never expected adults to follow such dares. But… being intoxicated…

According to the Guardia Civil, the suspect gave this explanation while officers investigated the incident.

However, the authorities haven’t identified the application or described the supposed challenge. No independent confirmation exists that such a challenge existed.

His statement leaves several questions unanswered. Was there actually a challenge encouraging people to enter strangers’ hotel rooms? Did the suspect misunderstand something he’d seen online? Or was he trying to explain his behavior after being confronted by police?

At present, none of those possibilities has been established. What investigators did confirm was that the man was intoxicated, had entered a room occupied by other guests without permission and had allegedly lunged at a sleeping woman.

Officers arrested the tourist on suspicion of allanamiento de morada, a Spanish offense involving unlawful entry into a protected private living space.

Officers took him to the Guardia Civil station in Santanyí, where they prepared the relevant paperwork before referring the case to the judicial authorities. Spanish media reported the incident on October 7, followed by English-language coverage in the Majorca Daily Bulletin on October 8.

The reports don’t identify the hotel or the couple, and no subsequent judicial outcome has been publicly established in the coverage available so far.

An Important Question About the Mallorca Hotel Remains Unanswered

While investigators explained how the German tourist entered the couple’s room, one detail remains unclear in the available reports.

How did he reach their terrace in the first place?

The Guardia Civil said the man entered through the sliding terrace door without forcing entry. However, the reports don’t explain whether the terrace was accessible from a public area, an adjacent room, or another part of the hotel.

They also don’t establish whether the sliding door was locked.

Those details could help explain how the intrusion happened and whether the property had security vulnerabilities.

I’ve stayed in hotels with balconies and terraces, and this incident reminds me to check every accessible door before going to sleep, not just the main entrance. It’s a precaution worth considering alongside other hotel room safety concerns.

The Mallorca couple managed to remove the stranger and get help, but they faced a frightening situation in a place where they should have been able to sleep without worrying about someone entering their room.

While the suspect’s explanation about a mobile-app challenge has sparked curiosity, the unanswered question of how he accessed the terrace also deserves attention.
